Comprehensive & Compassionate Veterinary Surgery for Anoka MN Pets

It is no surprise that pet owners consistently choose Rum River Veterinary Clinic for excellence in veterinary surgery and services. We take the following precautions with our surgical patients because we believe there is no such thing as "too safe":

Pet Surgery at Rum River Veterinary Clinic
  • A complete physical examination performed prior to anesthesia
  • A secure, in-dwelling intravenous catheter
  • Laboratory pre-anesthetic testing to identify any potential complications
  • Fluid therapy during anesthesia
  • Constant monitoring throughout the entire anesthetic process with high-tech equipment by the veterinarian and a certified veterinary technician
  • Post-operative monitoring

Our on-site laboratory and diagnostic imaging technology provides faster results and rapid response time, allowing our veterinarians to provide anesthesia and perform surgery with more accuracy and a higher level of safety.

Our surgical team regularly performs a wide variety of soft tissue and elective surgeries, including spay, neuter, and declaw procedures. We also have access to board-certified specialists and surgeons, who perform surgeries or diagnostic procedures at our clinic on a routine basis. They specialize in orthopedic procedures such as fractures and anterior cruciate ligament repairs, as well as many others. There are many benefits to spaying and neutering pets, and we encourage owners to consider this procedure before their pet is 6 months old. Although best done at an early age, these procedures can be done later in life as well.

Benefits of spaying your female pet:

  • Pet lives a longer, healthier life
  • No more heat cycles that attract males
  • Less desire to roam
  • Reduces or eliminates mammary gland tumors and ovarian/uterine cancer, especially if done before the first heat cycle
  • Eliminates unwanted litters

Benefits of neutering your male pet:

  • Pet lives a longer, healthier life
  • Reduces or eliminates spraying and marking
  • Reduces desire to roam and potential injuries due to fights or auto accidents
  • Eliminates testicular cancer
  • Decreases prostate disease
  • Eliminates unwanted litters
  • Decreases aggressive behavior and dog bites

We are pleased to discuss these benefits to your pet—and your family!—during your regular wellness appointment or puppy or kitten visit.

Most clients are surprised at how active their pets are after surgery. Our balanced approach to anesthesia allows for a smooth and quick recovery—almost all pets go home the same day of the surgery. We will discuss all of your post-surgical concerns at the time of surgical discharge. This includes written discharge instructions detailing the following:

  • An explanation of restricted activity
  • Instructions on home care and monitoring of surgical incisions
  • A description of all post-surgical medications

Post-surgical pain management is an essential and important part of our surgical service. No pet is ever expected to suffer, and our goal is to minimize or eliminate pain for every procedure. Every pet is sent home with post-surgical pain medication, as well as antibiotics to aid in the healing process. Should your pet appear to be suffering in spite of these measures, call us at once to discuss an alternate approach.

Your pet deserves the most compassionate surgical services available—at Rum River Veterinary Clinic, we take the time to care!
