Your Pet’s First Year

On the day you bring your young pet home, contact Rum River Veterinary Clinic to make an appointment. The first visit consists of a thorough physical exam by the veterinarian, identifying any veterinary concerns or developmental issues from head to tail.

Once we determine that your pet is healthy, disease prevention is our second priority. The puppy or kitten series of vaccinations is initiated to protect your new pet from dangerous and deadly diseases. Visit our vaccinations page for a detailed description of the basic vaccines and the diseases they are designed to prevent.

Our trained veterinary professionals perform a microscopic stool sample exam to identify intestinal parasites, and treatment or prevention is begun at this time. Preventing parasites is critical to the health of any animal, but our animal babies need to be watched very closely for signs of parasite infections. We also are concerned because some of these parasites can be transmitted to humans. For puppies, we offer heartworm preventives as well; heartworm is a deadly parasite that is easily controlled with a year-round program.

External parasites are serious problems in a young pet and can jeopardize the health of your puppy or kitten as well. Flea control is an essential part of our pet wellness program, and we will advise you about products and preventive medications to make life easier for you and your pet.

At 3-6 months of age in a healthy puppy or kitten, we recommend spaying or neutering to reduce the risk of reproduction and to avoid a variety of health and behavioral problems associated with intact pets. View our surgery page for more information about spaying or neutering your pet.

Feed your pet only high-quality puppy or kitten food for optimum growth and development. Prevent obesity by feeding the proper amount, and never offer your young pet table food or bones for treats. An exercise regime also is important for proper growth, muscle development, and overall health. Every pet needs various outlets for exercise every day, several times a day. Our veterinarians will assist you in determining which foods are right for your pet and help you to develop an exercise plan appropriate for your healthy puppy or kitten.

Socializing new puppies or kittens is important, and they should be handled daily and exposed to a variety of people and environments. Handle your pet’s paws, ears, and mouth; groom on a regular basis, and engage in play that encourages a relationship of trust and builds the human-animal bond.
